7 Card Stud Strategy

Texas Hold'em may be the most popular form of poker today, but that wasn't always the case. 7 Card Stud, once the most popular poker game in the world, is a variation of the Stud style of poker. The game rules are slightly complex, but that is the very reason why this game is fun to play.

The variation gets its name from the number of cards that are dealt to each player. Because of the number of cards that are potentially required in a game, usually 7 Card Stud poker is restricted to anywhere between three to seven players only.

Three cards are dealt to each player, two down and one facing up. Then there are 3 subsequent betting rounds, one card is dealt to each player per round. These 3 cards are all dealt face up. Then in the last round, the last card is dealt face down.

The skill level not only refers to the skills of poker playing, but also the ones needed to read opponents accurately. Another important factor is that most of the opponent's hand is visible; conversely, the same goes for your own hand. Keep this in mind when making decisions. For example, if a card that is required to complete a good hand is in the opponent's stack, then it's of no use to you. Being able to see some of the opponent's cards allows one to make informed decisions by keeping track of the cards in play.

Most novices play too many opening hands. When players play with weak opening hands, they're often forced to fold later when they realize they can't win. Experienced players will carefully weigh the hands they hold and play only about 35% of them.
